Democracy’s Degree Apprenticeship Programme is redefining how the PR and digital marketing industry develops early-career talent. In its fourth year, the scheme attracts exceptional demand, offering a unique blend of 80% practical agency experience and 20% academic study, delivered in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. Apprentices graduate debt-free with a fully-funded BSc and four years of live client experience, rotating across PR, influencer, social, paid media and creative disciplines. This breadth, supported by structured mentoring and meaningful responsibility throughout, creates rounded practitioners with integrated, future-ready skills.

The programme has had a transformative impact on Democracy itself. Apprentices bring fresh academic insight, accelerating innovation, AI adoption and best-practice processes. Their long-term presence fosters deep team cohesion, contributing to two consecutive years of zero staff turnover. Their curiosity and challenge mindset drive operational improvements, while their cross-functional exposure allows the agency to shape new roles around emerging strengths, namely our upcoming specialist position in AI, Innovation, Insights and Paid Media.

For apprentices, the impact is equally profound. They experience accelerated professional growth, consistent mentorship, real client accountability - building confidence and capability beyond typical entry-level pathways. The agency’s strong cultural environment ensures they feel supported, integrated and empowered to contribute ideas that influence real campaigns. Most importantly, they choose to stay: Our first graduating apprentice is already progressing into a bespoke AI visibility role reflecting his talents.
